When fathers are faced with legal matters involving their children, it is important to seek the counsel of an objective, experienced lawyer who can provide guidance through these difficult issues.  Several factors can compound the problems experienced by fathers, including the stress caused by divorce, parental alienation and confusion over child support issues.

We often see fathers who have become frustrated by a soured relationship with the mother of their child or who feel alienated by the legal system.  Despite the difficulties experienced by many fathers during the time of separation, divorce or custody litigation, the value of the father/ child relationship cannot be underestimated.

Fathers, like Mothers, play an irreplaceable role in the lives of their children.  Each is equally important. There is no substitute for the positive presence of a father who is actively involved in the lives of his children.

Studies have shown that children who are raised with the positive presence of their father, on average, do better in school, have higher self esteem, have more confidence and are less likely to fall prey to crime and substance abuse.

The following statistics are compelling indicators of the perils which can result from father abandonment:

  •  According to the National Center on Health Studies, children who have no relationship with their fathers are 100% to 200% more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems.

  • Boys whose fathers have abandoned them, are 300% more likely to be incarcerated.

  • Girls whose fathers have abandoned them, are 164% more likely to give birth to a child out of wedlock.

  • 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from father absent homes.

  • 72% of adolescent murderers grew up in father absent homes.

  • More than 70% of all juveniles in state reform institutions come from homes where the father was not present and was not involved in the lives of their children.

While there are fathers out there who are not active in the lives of their kids, there are many fathers who are very involved and who understand the impact of their relationship with their children.  We are often contacted by fathers who wish to continue, or establish, a close and loving relationship with their children.

For the father of a child born out of wedlock, certain
legal matters must usually be dealt with to protect and to establish his legal rights to his children.   The establishment of a fair amount of child support is a crucial element and to have an order of child support is a benefit to both the father and the child.   In these instances, a court order establishing the father's legal rights, including custodial and/or visitation rights, is extremely important.
